Security in depth
From Sysadmin
When an attacker cannot be prevented from breaking into a network it is possible to contain them. Balancing ease of access for users with restricting internal access is a risk assessment.
Security in depth does not always refer to extra physical security devices (such as multiple firewalls). Augmenting a firewall with a Network IDS is an example of security in depth also.
