Related to the principle of consistency is the concept of homogeneity.

Increasing the variety of software in use will increase the management overhead. Using MySQL and PostgreSQL in an organisation increases the costs of database management as staff need to be trained to manage both databased, backups and disaster recovery need to accomodate both systems, etc.
