FTP offers no advantages over SFTP today. It does have several disadvantages though:

  • Passes passwords in clear text
  • Only serious auth option is password
  • Does not play well with firewalls (active vs passive mode)

Some years ago it was difficult to convince MS-Windows users to use SFTP due to a lack of MS-Windows clients but that is no longer the case. Many MS-Windows based file transfer clients support SFTP.
